Greg Scott is the director of the Social Science Research Center and a professor in the Department of Sociology at DePaul University. He teaches courses on ethnographic documentary film production, photographic/visual sociology, substance use and abuse, underground economies, street gangs, and other topics. Over the course of his career, he has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork on street gangs, homeless and precariously housed injection drug users, habitual crack smokers, sex workers, burglars, thieves and drug dealers.

Although his film career arguably began at age 10, when he formed his own "detective agency" and used a Super 8 movie camera to produce surveillance footage of his neighbors, Greg began making ethnographic documentary films in 1988 as an undergraduate in the Center for Visual Anthropology at the University of Southern California. His semi-traditional ethnographic and epidemiological research led him to produce and direct independent documentary film and radio projects. In 2005 Greg established Sawbuck Productions, a non-profit organization that produces multi-media educational materials and training films for health professionals and laypersons working with injection drug users as well as social documentaries to acquaint the public and policy makers with the +-drug user population. His films have been screened at festivals around the world and his work has appeared on radio and television, including the National Geographic Network, BET Network and MSNBC. He received a 2008 Lisagor Award for Best Investigative/Public Service Reporting for his Chicago Public Radio series The Brickyard: Life on the Streets of Chicago, an example of what he calls "immersive sociology" or "embedded journalism".

Greg received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997.

Wes Shrum's interest in the sociology of science and technology in the developing world has been taking him to Kenya, Ghana, and Kerala in southwestern to do research since the 1990s. His increasing use of video ethnography as a primary research method also extends to his own backyard. He and his students are midway through a ten-year project that uses video-taped interviews and footage of key events in the disaster and recovery to document the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They have collected more than 800 hours of footage, all of which will be deposited as an archive in the Louisiana State Museum.
